Don’s Musings

Art Journal- November 28, 2022

In graphic novel news, the digital proofs for A Home Without are back from the printer and are looking great!  So, as an early holiday gift, digital and physical copies of the book should be going out very soon.  For Kickstarter patrons who ordered autographed copies, I’ll be signing and mailing those as well, in addition to the original artwork for super-backers.

As a kid, I always enjoyed the work of Donald Glut in the original Masters of the Universe mini-comics from the 1980s.  Here is a YouTube clip of a recent interview with him in which he discusses his life and career:

In graphic novel news for A Home Without, we’re moving right along with printing.  I can’t wait!

On a side note, my apologies for no Dapper Men in Love or Sparky the Sassy Android comics as of late.  Recent family health concerns have slowed me down a bit, but I should be back on track with new webcomics over the course of the next few days.

In booky book news, the publisher and I are putting the last few prepress touches on A Home Without.  A warm thank you goes out to Sina Grace of Not My Bag and Lil Depressed Boy for providing the graphic novel’s foreword.  Here is a link to an older interview in which he talks about the creative process for his own projects:

On a side (and completely random) note, why oh why did I not go to see Sophie B. Hawkins?  She recently performed a local show at City Winery here in Atlanta.  Maybe she will return soon…

Art Journal- October 26, 2022

As a naturally shy person, I’m learning that I take to Instagram much better than Twitter!  And that’s okay… We all function within a bubble and while we can stretch out a bit here and there beyond our comfort zone, at a certain point, especially as an artist and writer, one must go his or her own way (as Stevie Nicks would say).

AWA (Anime Weekend Atlanta) is coming up this weekend here in Atlanta, GA.  It’s especially fun to walk around the Artist Alley area.  I think the conventions are still recovering from the pandemic and trying to mend the wounds of the last three years or so.  Some of the conventions didn’t survive the three year absence.  Gradually, I imagine more and more conventions (as well as various entertainment and art events) will make a recovery.  The process will simply take time.

In book news, my graphic novel, A Home Without, is nearing the final stages.  I’m both nervous and excited.  Again, I can’t wait for this book to be in the hands of readers.  Currently, I’m also working on a sequel to my prose novel, Portraits of Familiar Strangers.  I’ve decided on a title for the new prose book, but will hold off on announcing that until a date in the near future.

To everyone out there… Be safe—enjoy Halloween.  I love you!

Art Journal- October 17, 2022

With the completion of A Home Without’s Kickstarter, the remainder of October seems to be flying by.  In recent weeks, I’ve spent a good chunk of time proofreading the graphic novel pages.  It’s funny—no matter how long or how often I proofread, errors never fail to come out of the woodwork.  I’m anxious for this novel to be in the hands of readers and continue along its way.  Again, thanks to all of the patrons who supported A Home Without through the Kickstarter campaign.  Much love to you.

Within the last few days, sometimes I’ll have a chance to read early in the morning (though not for very long).  Here are a few books currently residing on my reading table:  Farmer Giles of Ham, by Tolkien, The Borrowers, by Mary Norton, and The Haunted Looking Glass anthology, compiled by Edward Gorey.  I especially recommend the latter as we near Halloween!

Thank You!

Many, many thanks to all the Kickstarter pledgers—family members, friends, as well as loved ones far and wide!  Thanks to the pledges, my graphic novel, A Home Without, will soon be a reality and in the hands of readers via Northwest Press!  Much love to all—Don

Flame On Interview

An interview with Bryan of the Flame On Show and Zan Christensen of Northwest Press in which we discuss the upcoming graphic novel A Home Without, the corresponding Kickstarter, and comics in general:

Speaking of Kickstarter, we’re approaching the goal!  With just a few more pledges, A Home Without will become a reality!  Of course, we’re not there yet, so it’s important to continue passing the information along to friends, loved ones, or anyone who may be interested!  Thank you again and love to all—Don

Kickstarter Status—September 27

A few quick notes on the Kickstarter for the graphic novel, A Home Without—we’re 90% toward the funding goal with just four days left.  We’re so very close!  Let’s see it through!  Please share the Kickstarter information with any who may be interested.  Also, Zan Christensen of Northwest Press will be updating the Kickstarter page soon with exclusive artwork and other updates: https://tinyurl.com/bdzdu55t

Meanwhile, I wanted to share an early A Home Without concept:

In a disparate future, Sparky encounters intergalactic warlords, devious aliens, and an ever burgeoning midlife crises. Rest assured, Sparky and his comrade.
